Quantum Talks: Quantum-Secure Cryptography with Christian Schaffner

Recent progress in building quantum computers offers new opportunities for cryptography, but also poses a threat to existing cryptographic schemes. I will discuss both aspects of this double-edged sword: On the one hand, a large-scale quantum computer will be able to quickly factorize large numbers into prime factors, thus breaking the security of currently used public-key encryption. The research field of “post-quantum cryptography” investigates the options for replacing currently used classical (i.e., non-quantum) cryptography with quantum-safe variants. On the other hand, quantum computers introduce new security scenarios, such as the secure delegation of a quantum computation to an untrusted server (in the quantum cloud) without compromising the privacy of the input data.

Prof. Dr. Christian Schaffner

Prof. Dr. Christian Schaffner received his degree in mathematics from ETH Zurich in Switzerland in 2003. In 2007, he obtained his PhD in computer science from the University of Aarhus in Denmark. After his postdoc at CWI Amsterdam, he started working at the University of Amsterdam, first at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) and now as a professor of Theoretical Computer Science and group leader of the Theory of Computer Science (TCS) group at the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam. He is also a senior researcher at QuSoft, the Dutch research center for quantum software.

Christian is a world leader in the field of quantum cryptography. He is actively involved in securing non-quantum information against quantum attackers (also known as post-quantum cryptography), and designing protocols that solve cryptographic problems involving quantum data and quantum communication.

Talent and Learning Centre (QTLC-A)

This event is hosted by the Talent and Learning Centre of Quantum.Amsterdam. QTLC-A helps everybody who is interested in education in the domain of quantum technology by making clear what workshops, courses, events, programs and meetups are offered. QTLC-A helps educational developers to extend or improve their offering or even initiates specific workshops or training.
